Lightening Bugs Catch and Release

This year there doesn’t seem to be as many lightening bugs out and about at night like we usually have this time of year. As kids we used to really enjoy running around in the backyard catching as many as we could and like the majority of kids we put them in a jar that we had poked some holes in the lid so that they could have fresh air and hopefully live a couple of days in. We would put the jar by our bed and watch them flying around and lighting up as we tried to go to sleep.

Now that I’m an adult, I have to admit that I am sad to think that when we did that, we were killing them off, and I feel guilty that we did that. Now I encourage kids to only keep them in a jar for a couple of hours, and then let them go. Practice catch and release, catch and release.
